President's Cup In Paris
20 players and 16 accompanying persons made the trip to Paris where the French proved too strong on the red clay, but we succeeded in enjoying their hospitality at La Boulie and the Versailles club, took in matches at the French Open and were treated to a terrific cocktail party, consumed lunches which were by far the best at any tennis event ever, and consoled by a wonderful 3 course banquet with special French wine. The euro had retreated sufficiently for participants to even find some comfort in the Paris shops.
We
threatened to host the Presidents' Cup on grass in two years' time, but the French were sanguine, claiming the reason the French were less successful at the French Open now is because they have become so good on grass! Perhaps we shall test that proposition in 2012.

Canadian Matches At The Piping Rock Club
The 10th meeting between IC Canada and the USIC on June 5-6 was filled with
Top L to R: Margie Gengler Smith, Jeannie Gengler Swiacki, Margie Cooper, Sophie Barnard, Ripley Hartmeyer, Canadians Pam Olley, Dale Kozicz, Evelyn Hustwit Bottom L to R: Connie Jones, Simmy Pell, Mina Pell Mitby, Louise Gengler, Canadian Susanna Sekely
 | good weather, great play and exciting results.
The women's match went down to the final matches on Sunday but it was eventually the Canadians who took back the cup that the Americans had won the year before. The weekend began with both the men's and women's teams arriving at The Piping Rock Club to get in a couple of hours of practice on the beautiful grass courts. The Canadian women, captained by Pam Olley, brought some familiar faces as well as some new players - notably two teens aged just 16 and 17 fresh from international play in Florida. The Americans also included many players from past years and invited Piping Rock Club's top junior players to participate and take on the young Canadians. After the Friday arrivals got in their practice, the women gathered at
the home of Marion Gengler Melton and her husband Drew for a lovely cookout and official welcome. Although the weather threatened all weekend and we had rain plans at the Port Washington Tennis Academy, the rain fortunately held off. With generous assistance from the Nassau Country Club, all matches were played outdoors mixing in some clay at Nassau with Piping's grass. The play was at a high level with quality competitive matches all weekend. Saturday was nip and tuck the whole day with a final tally of USA 4, Canada 7. Sunday continued to be tense with the US receiving an immense boost from Aila Main and Bridget Steers who got a big win over the undefeated young Canadians, Solomiya Zinko and Amy He. With the US keeping it close, ultimately it was Canadian captain Pam Olley and Dale Kozciz who won the decisive match for a ten to six Canadian win. In wonderful IC fashion, the weekend was filled not only with great
tennis but with new friendships and the rekindling of old ones. The Piping Rock Club provided lovely courtside lunches overlooking the golf course and croquet lawn for the men and the women each day. The Saturday banquet highlighted the weekend's social festivities with a delicious dinner, fun introductions of team members and entertaining speeches from the younger IC members. We look forward to our return visit to Canada next year!

Twenty-seven men and women from the two
teams assembled from the northeast US, Florida and California, Belgium and Canada to play 13 highly competitive singles and 18 doubles matches in three days. Amigos Cup At La Jolla Beach & Tennis
November 4 - November 7, 2010 La Jolla, California, USA La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club 2000 Spindrift Drive, LaJolla, California 858-454-4600, 877-803-4670 www.ljbtc.com
The USIC hosts the IC of Mexico in the Annual Amigos Cup. An all-inclusive special rate will be available to players and
guests. More information to follow shortly.
For over 70 years at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, the twang of racquet strings and squeak of tennis shoes on the hard court have been as common as the sound of surf breaking on the shore. A virtual who's who of tennis stars have served and volleyed their way to greatness on its courts since F.W. Kellogg first strung nets and invited guests to play on four newly constructed courts in 1935.
The Club's reputation as a tennis-place-to-go was not long in coming. By 1942, the Club had attracted its first major tournament, the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships, and, by the 1950s, had become a prominent stop on the tournament circuit, playing host to numerous USTA National Hard Court Tennis Championships. In 2006 the Club hosted the Davis Cup First Round Tie between the United States and Romania.
