USA defeats Canada 19-3 in Inaugural Desert Cup.
The first-ever playing of the Desert Cup saw the Americans defeat the Canadians in convincing fashion over two days at the prestigious Vintage Club in Indian Wells, California. The strong US team featured six new USIC members playing in their first IC match. The Desert Cup kicked off on Sunday evening, with a festive Mexican dinner and cocktail hour immediately following the conclusion of the Men’s Final at the BNP Paribas Open. Team USA swept the singles matches the next match, with only one match splitting sets. The American then won 3 of 5 doubles matches in the afternoon. Following Monday’s matches, players and their guests enjoyed a wonderful outdoor dinner overlooking the club’s sunken stadium center court. Tuesday’s matches were more closely contested, with four of the nine matches needing a deciding super tie break. The Americans came out on top in three of those matches, however, losing just one doubles match on the day. That second day featured a rare and special result, a tie in the 70’s doubles: In what was supposed to be a replay of a match from the day before, the players instead decided to exchange partners (USA/CAN vs. USA/CAN) in hopes of making the match more competitive. In a result fitting of the spirit of the IC, the teams chose to congratulate each other by shaking hands after splitting the first two sets.
