USIC Member Book Announcement: SELF COACH TENNIS: How to be your own best self coach

Jun 12, 2025

I am a psychologist and a tennis player.  I’ve written a book about how to relate with yourself effectively in tennis and life.  It’s called Self Coach Tennis: How to be your own best self coach.  We all believe it is helpful to coach ourselves through life events but we don’t tend to get systematic training on how to do it.  In this book I share my mental training program about how to self coach.  The reader is trained on practical mental skills, perspectives and models.  The training teaches how to access positive mental states and make effective adjustments while playing.  The reader is provided with the tools to play up to their ability, have a positive experience, and discover what it takes to improve.  When you play Self Coach Tennis you commit to utilizing your self coaching skills as you play.

About me:  My inspiration for writing this book was actually the birth of my grandson, Caiden, who is now about 1 1/2 years old.  I wanted him to have access to the information in this book as he grows up.  I am also hoping to help people and players in general be able to improve their performance and experiences.  In my work as a psychologist I have done considerable work with tennis players, other athletes, musicians and the general population.  In this book I draw on my psychology background and personal experiences. As a tennis player, I have won 40 USTA national doubles titles, teamed with 7 different partners, but mostly with Phil Landauer, Larry Turville and my son Cole.  I have also won 4 ITF individual world doubles titles (teamed with Turville).  I have represented the USA 5 times to play in the ITF world team championships, with 2 of the teams winning.   I have played in a number of USIC events, including the Ted Avory Cup, Potter Cup, President’s Cup and Gordon Cup.  I have been ranked #1 nationally in doubles in each age group 35-60, and in father-son and senior father-son tennis with my son Cole.  I was inducted into the USTA Midwest Hall of Fame in 2015.
