The first Common Law Cup competition among England, Ireland and the United States will be played at the Chevy Chase Club September 3 - 5. The Common Law Cup was established to bring together tennis playing members of the legal professions in common law countries and to honor those members who have combined an extraordinary legal career with outstanding achievements in, and contributions to, the sport of tennis.

The English, Irish and American teams will consist of men and women in various age categories who are lawyers, barristers and solicitors. The bi-annual competition will rotate to Ireland and England, respectively, in 2018 and 2020, and return to the USA in 2022. The founding members of the Common Law Cup plan to expand the competition in the future by adding other common law countries, such as Australia, Bermuda, Canada, India and New Zealand

For this inaugural event, the Common Law Cup will honor Steve Potts. Steve was a finalist in the Irish National Tennis Championships, and he played at Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals. Steve and his son Dek won won five National and one International Father/Son Tennis Championships and were twice ranked #1 in the United States for Father/Son Tennis. Steve also served on the Board of Directors for the United States Tennis Association and the Board of Directors and Ethics Oversight Committee for the United States Olympic Committee.

Steve's legal career was equally illustrious. He served as Director of the US Office of Government Ethics for 10 years reporting directly to Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton and later as the White House Ethics Counsel under President George W. Bush.
